direct vent vs power vent

Wondering why all the big box stores are not stocking d.vent water heaters. Seems to me the its would be quieter, less chance of failure and probably the same efficiency.....? Am I missing something? thanks

direct vent vs power vent

Ours carry both, but power vents are generally used is higher efficiency units that have slow combustion gas exhaust, or where direct vent is is difficult.

Thanks for your reply. Is it the combustion process that is more efficient? Would the cost to run the vent motor not offset the efficiencies? also, the dv's are always with a pilot, correct?
Thanks

direct vent vs power vent

My stores only carry power vent.
The guy who ordered it for me was also curious why they didn't stock it.
I was under the impression that direct vent was more effient w/ less parts to break, quieter, but it can't have as long of a pvc vent pipe.

It's also the better choice if you have an uber-sealed house where gas appliances could cause a vacuum.(or so states the literature)
