cutting natural gas line ?
I bought a natural gas grill and need to run a gas line from basement to the deck outside. The best way is to cut a long pipe in the basement and install a T connector to feed the grill. Is it safe to just cut the pipe? What is the best/safe way to do this?

This is a case where you should let a professional do it. A gas leak can kill.

A plumber will have all the tools to turn new threads on the cut Black pipe. For the cost of having a plumber do it right the first time, do yourself a favor & open up the wallet. At times, us guys have to swallow our Man pride, and just call the people with the better experience. Now of course if it was me, I could make one phone call to my dad, since he is experienced in this field, and he could have it done quicker then waiting a couple of days for a plumber to show.

Cutting it is the easy part. The problem is that you'd have to then thread the old pipe to accept the T fitting, and would probably need a union as well to facilitate the connection.

This is one of those cases where you do need a plumber unless you want to do some serious re-piping of your existing gas system.

Either way be sure to pull a permit for the new gasline and the connection to the old, as required by code. They'll ensure your new pipe is sized correctly and that the existing system can take the addition gas demand. They'll also check the air test that needs to be put on the new sections of line to check for leaks.
