Converting an old brass tub drain to sched 40 PVC?

During demo of the bathroom we noticed the old brass tub drain was broken right at the point where the vertical piece meets the trap. So ideally I would like to convert it to a schedule 40 PVC setup for the new tub. Based in the photo can this be done? Would we need to cut out the old trap from behind the solder joint and couple the PVC setup to that?Converting an old brass tub drain to sched 40 PVC?-imageuploadedbydiy-chat1414591027.350637.jpg

Should be trying to get rid of all that old copper or bronze pipe before it starts leaking.

Joe will cut it out for free also...

What you need after you cut it back to copper pipe is this.

Its a proflex model 3001-150 copper to plastic transitional coupling.

Just joking Joe...

Wrong coupling that one is for cast iron to cast iron. It will not make a smooth connection and hair will get caught clogging your drain.

Hmm... I grabbed that one specifically because it says "for connecting cast iron, plastic, and steel drain pipes and fittings"

Do they have the proper one at the big box stores or is this a plumbing supply house purchase?

Edit, I see now it doesn't say copper also... Yep, I'm a genius lol

I am going to agree with Joe and suggest the coper drain lines be removed now that you have things open. It is a well known fact, especially on horizontal lines, that copper drains fail eventually, usually within 30 years of install. However, if you insist on taking that chance of ripping things up again 2 years from now, how about just purchasing a new brass j-bend with a captured nut and not cutting the copper at all?
