Constant Dripping Outside House Valve (Maybe Water Softener)

Hello Professionals,

I have a small issue. I just noticed today that there is a constant drip from one of the valves outside my house. Check out the pictures below for better idea:

The pipe that is going into the house and which is at the bottom controls the house water. I am not sure what the leaking/dripping pipe does. I think it is my water softener but I am not sure. I think it has been dripping for a long time and I just noticed it today.

Also, I checked the salt tank for the water softener and noticed that there is very little water and salt inside the tank.

Need your expert advice!!

Looks like the drip is just a loose packing stem at the ball valve. That thing is a backflow preventer and has nothing to do with your watersoftener. Do you by chance have an irrigation system?

Constant Dripping Outside House Valve (Maybe Water Softener)

Hi NHMaster,

Yes! I do have an irrigation system I totally forgot about that. I am in Houston, TX and yes couple of weeks ago we had below zero degree temperature. What are the steps to fix this problem? Whom should I call? How much will the fix cost? Can I fix it myself?

Thanks a million again!

Were the temperatures below zero or just below freezing that you experienced?
