Connecting Steel Pipes, need ideas!

Hi all, I'm thinking of doing a skating grind rail that is easily portable and storable in the car. Here I'm thinking of connecting segments of steel pipes together, however, the connecting joints should be smooth, yet secure, without any protrusion. Is there anything like a stealth steel pipe coupling available in the market? Or any mates have better ideas?

you can always have threads tapped into the sections and get bolt portions to connect them. that way the pipes butt right up to each other with only the seam touching.

Not sure that I know exactly what you are doing, but search "kee klamp"; I think that might be close to what you are looking for. You will probably have to go through an industrial supply or material handling company to get them, but they might be well worth the effort. Just happened to think that Grainger might handle them, but I don't know.

What kinda of car do you have?

Just got me thinkin'.. you should come up with a prototype for "grind" rails that double as nerf bars (step bars) like you see on an SUV. They would connect with a locking pin to the frame of the vehicle, then have an extendable arm (like kickstand) to hold them upright (for grinding). When you're done scrapin' up your knees and elbows, you slap 'em back on the truck and head out for a beer to sooth the pain.

...remember me when you're rich

Getting thread tapped seems like a good idea to get the seamless connection.

Kee klamp is great but it is not giving me the overall smooth/seamless rail I need.

Crazy, but possible, idea to double as nerf bars. Maybe you should do it! ..and not forgetting me when you're rich .

I've got some tube "rock rails" on my jeep ... I don't think it'd be easy to make some that would be sturday on the vehicle without rattling and easily removable.
