Connecting new 1 1/4 inch PVC trap to old 1/1/2 inch metal drain line

I am cosmetically renovating an old bathroom in my home. The horizontal drain line is not roughed in far enough past my existing wall tile for me to remove an old threaded ring that used to probably seal the pipe coming out of the wall to the old horizontal sink drain/trap. What are my options for sliding a 1 1/4 inch pvc pipe into the 1 1/2 inch, and then sealing, glueing, etc. Anybody had this problem before? Connecting metal pipes to pvc?

Sounds like your describing the trap adapter nut. You need to remove it in order to get a seal. Carefully remove enough of the wall finish so you can get a pair of pliers on the nut.

After that, you'll need a 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 slip joint washer to make up the difference between the two pipe sizes.
