Configuration of 2 ball valves on Sump Discharge Line

I currently have one output line for my sump discharge. I want to be able to direct the sump discharge to 2 different locations when needed. To accomplish this im going to add another discharge line and connect it to the existing line. After the split i want to add a valve one each line to control the discharge to both lines if needed, or select one over the other if needed. Is there any rules as to where these valves should be placed? Do they need to be Vertical or Horizontal. I attached 2 pictures to illustrate my 2 options. Whats the best choice

Ok, i will place them as close to the check valve as possible. What is the reasoning for this?

Also, does it mater if they are horizontal or vertical. If i put them close to the check valve they will be vertical. Does that cause any problems with Air getting trapped?

Thanks
Chris
