Question

clogged garbage disposal

Water backs up at the garbage disposal and will not drain until the disposal is turned on. I've made sure the sink drain was not clogged, and even used a plunger on the disposal.
Otherwise the disposal works fine so I'm not sure what else could be wrong. Any thoughts?

Your drain is running slow----

Remove the P-trap and clean that out ---rodding the pipe into the wall would also make sense as long as the P-trap is off.

Is this a single or double basin sink? If it's a dual basin, does the other side drain properly?

The entire drain appears clean since the water clears out once the disposal is turned on.
It's a single basin with the disposal at the drain. The disposal doesn't allow the water from the basin to drain until it is powered on.

Post a picture of the piping---I still bet it's a slow drain---

Could be clogged

Might be piped wrong

The disposer pushes the water like a pump---it would drain by itself if the pipe is flowing freely.

Make sure you use plenty of water when grinding and run water for a while after to clear the lines.
