clogged bath tub

hey i know a ton of people have posted under clogged bath tub. my friend and i have pulled the overflow and are trying to snake with a 1/4" snake. sadly though after fighting with it 4-5 inches in the snake is visible in the drain and starts to coil up.
looking at diagrams online that shouldn't be happening it should go straight to the p or s trap.

help

how do i get it to the trap not the main drain?????

You may be dealing with a cast iron drum or bell trap. Nearly impossible to get a snake thru them. If that is where your clog is, better to replace it with a P trap. Also not a fun job due to space restrictions, trying to get two hands and tools in 1 sq inch of space.

There's two of you, cover up the overflow and plunge that drain. When one gets red in the face, switch over....... you'll get it.
