Clicking sound when hot water turned on
Our hot water heater is in the attic above the MBR and master bath room. When the hot water is turned on, a clicking sound begins in the wall below where the hot water heater is located. It starts loud and then gets quieter. When the hot water is turned off, the clicking sound continues, first louder and then gets quiter (and less frequent) over a period of time and eventually stops. Any suggestions?

I will assume you have copper water lines.
Inspect the places where the line from the water heater may be in direct contact with joists, floors or walls. Copper expands and contracts a lot with temperature change and will make noise as it slides along another surface. If you find any places where there is contact you can isolate the pipe from the wood with armaflex or plastic pipe supports. It wouldn't hurt to insulate your hot water line with armaflex if there is none now. |
