Clear silicone caulk used instead of plumber's putty**HELP**

We have a bathroom sink that someone used a clear silicone caulk on the drain flange instead of plumber's putty. They left one heck of a mess all over the sink that I can't get off with anything on the market. I've even used a razor to try to scrape the mess off of the sink bowl itself. A salesperson at Lowe's recommended some gooey green stuff that I let sit for over 24 hours without ANY softening of the caulk. Is there anything else I can try? (besides hunting the plumber down and caulking HIM?)
Thanks in advance!

I think I started with one of those. I just finished reading a thread on here where some guy had the same problem with silicone in a tub. One suggestion was a sanding drill. Sounds like I'm stuck with a mess and I'm not alone.
Oh well, I tried. Thanks for your help, Joe.
