cleaning the overflow of a sink

What is the best way to clean the inside of the sink overflow? I find whenever I run the water, I get a quick wiff of shaver hair smell, probably because some of it has managed to get into the overflow from the drain. I was thinking of filling the sink with javex or other cleaning product and letting it overflow into the hole, would this work?

Maybe even drain cleaner as it will foam and clean the inside better.

Do not use drain cleaner, as it may break the sink. Install the stopper in the sink. Pour in one cup of household bleach. Slowly run either cold or hot water into the sink (to avoid splashing the bleach). Let it go into the overflow. Continue to run water until the bleach odor is gone. This should cure your problem.
