Changing potty. Do I need to change the flange out?

I am replacing a toilet in my home. First floor (ground). I am generally fairly handy and have changed many Johns in my day…but am confused about something.

The potty I am replacing is a Jameco one piece (not a very good unit, IMO)..and am replacing with a Kohler Cimarron..one piece…Class 5 flush. Supposedly its got some power for a one-piece unit…which is what I need with 2 kids under age 5…just learning how to “go” potty… …lots of tissue…multiple flushes… you get the picture. Te Jameco could not handle the load, no pun intended.

Anyway, the kid at Lowes said that the Cimarron has a wider base and I need a bigger flange. Now I have changes many potties but naver ahd to change the flange out. Usually its just pull old potty out…scrape out wax, install new potty…bolt it in…and away you go. This guy said that most flanges are too small to accommodate….so I would have to pull old flange out (no idea how to go about that since its gotta be cemented to the PVC drain, right)?

So I am checking out at Lowes and a guy starts talking to me…a plumber. He said I don’t need to change the flange. I told him what the kid in Fashion Plumbing had said…specifically that there “is a small chance that the flange in there can take it (I think he said that some are 3 or 4 inches compatible) but most likely, you gotta change it.” This guy said, “I am a plumber and I am telling you, its fine.”

Any advice. I am reticent to take old flange out…sounds like it could be some work. Especially since I am assuming its fused to the PVC drain. Would I have to pull it up, hope it gives some, and hack it off with a saw or something? Again, its on ground floor. House is in charlotte NC, about 14 years old if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

THB

Ignore the Lowe's knows-nothing-kid, listen to the plumber.
You do NOT have the change the flange.
Just install it as you would any other.
Good Luck!

They should hang flyswatters in every aisle at box stores. That way, when their supposed experts give out ridiculous advice like this, people in the know can grab the flyswatter and smack them with it.

You should have no trouble with the standard flange that is already installed in your house. Unless it is broken, there's no need to replace it.

thanks folks. glad I checked. The Lowes kid said something about the flange needing to be bigger than normal because the Cimarron's base was so wide or something...but I checked the specs and it appears the trap and such are pretty standard. I guess he was trying to sell me hard on that $2.39 flange. LOL.

Take care,

Closet flanges are standard with the dimensions of distance between the bolt holes. If you go back to Lowes, pick up one of each "size" flange and lay them on top of each other. I happened to be at our Lowes one day when a customer needed an Air Admittance Valve. The saleskid told him there was no such thing. I waited a minute and then showed the guy where they were.

When I'm shopping at a big box, sometimes just for fun, I'll ask one of their "experts" a question about something just to see what stupid answer I get back.
LOL

Uhhh, guilty as charged. I like to ask about codes, specifically.

It is totally for my amusement. I just ask questions like I have no idea what is going on. Do I need a permit to do this water heater? Can I use compression fittings for gaslines? Etcetera.....
I never correct them. I wouldn't want to actually make them feel stupid. That would be mean, and I'm not a mean guy. It is a great way to entertain yourself. Try it, you'll love it.
