Changing out fixtures

I am replacing the shower and tub fixtures from a 17 year old Delta to a Price Pfister. They are both single handle. The shower diverter on the current fixture is incorporated into handle unit (It's a valve that you pull out or push in to activate.)

The new fixture has the diverter on the tub spout

My question is: Can I simply remove the integrated shower diverter and replace it with a pipe extension and then install the spout model? The can is the hard part because the fitting is below the opening. can this be done?

Changing out fixtures

For what it is worth, I would much rather have a 17 year old delta tub valve than a brand new price pfister any day ever. That being said, do you realize that the push-pull diverter valve is part of the tub/shower valve that you are going to replace? It should go away when you pull the old valve out.
