can't snake bathtub drain

Hi, This is something I never solved.

I have a bathtub drain that clogs often, usually because of long hair...

I tried to snake it with the long plumbing snake. However, the head of the snake is bigger than the drain slots. I can;t even put the snake in unless I unscrew the drain slots.

How do people snake the bathtub drains?

thanks

When I put it back on, I would only need putty to seal it?

Bleach dissolves hair and doesn't discriminate as to length. A couple of applications for bad clogs, allowing to sit a few minutes, followed by nearly boiling water is usually successful. If this is a persistent problem consider a strainer of some sort.

Run the snake through the overflow(remove the trim plate and plunger)
Also, on small drains I run a cable with no blades and a slight kink at the end of the cable- helps to turn 90's

Yes, it has been persistance. every 6-9 month. The renters there are two girls with very coarse long hair. I provided several strainers. Everytime I go check, the strainer is missing. They said once "because it is dirty to pick things out of the strainer. "

And believe me I pray to god that they can move out soon!!! leagally, i cannot kick them out. thanks to our provincial law!

i have a wife and 4 girls and all use same tub/shower and there hair is extra long.
(long as in my girls have never cut their hair and my wife's hair is almost 6 feet long)
and i use a watco push and pull drain and every 3 weeks we remove the push pull assembly by unscrewing and pull hair out with needle nose pliers from cross bars. never had a clogged drain yet and only takes a minute.

You are right---do not unscrew the drain cross thingy---that is what keeps the tub from leaking---

Follow E-Plumbers advice----use the over flow---and try one of those long plastic strips with the barbs---that usually clears the tub drain opening----I use a bent coat hanger some times---

thanks for sharing your experience. My renters can't stand cleaning the strainers. They definitely won't do the cleaning every 3 weeks....

Buy them some of those zip-it sticks that Mike referred to. If they cant use those on a regular basis- try sending them a bill from a drain cleaner

I probably am going to do the last step: send them a bill.... hard to charge when I do it myself tho, i am thinking of paying an expensive plumber.. then i am afraid they are just gonna not pay me back...

Use the Hot bleach, Boiling water method, then: fill the tub about 4 inches dry the tub and duct tape off the overflow. Now use your black deep force pump on the drain and blow her clear.

6 feet long, man that must be something to see. Whats her name Rapunzel?
