Can't seal tub spout against new tub surround

Just installed a new shower/tub surround. One last problem, I can't seal the spout against the surround. The surround bulges out a bit just where it meets the tub. Nice because it makes it easier to seal. But there is no flat surface for the tub spout to seal against (the tub spout is low just above the tub)

Any way I work it, there is going to be a lot of leak space around the spout. Is there a good fix? The space will be to big to be sealed off just with silicone.

Can't seal tub spout against new tub surround

I would just roll a roll of plumber's putty about the size of a nickle and wrap it around inside (but protruding slightly) the big end of the spout for filler, screw the spout on, and then caulk around the smaller gap left.
Good Luck!
Mike
