can't get water to go in hotwater heater

Would anyone know how to change an inlet vavle on a hotwater heater?
All pipes are hooked up to electric water heater and the cold water will not go in.

did you open a hot water faucet to let the air out of the tank and the water in?
Be sure not to turn on the water heater till all the air is out and the tank is full.

recieved a working hot water heater from a friend when they changed over to a tankless and mine blowed out. The water heater is a kenmore roto swirl. I keep opening the valve on the side for pressure and none is built up.

One reason we needed a picture is to see if you have the old style gate valves.
Lots of times they just will not shut off or the stem inside snaps off so it's stuck in one position.
Replace it with a ball valve, problum solved.
May be able to even use a Shark bite valve for an easyer install.

No way anyone here's going to know where it is without seeing it.
It was suppost to be right there at the heater on the cold side.
SOme many not even have one of it was plumbed wrong so you have to shut off water to the whole house to change a heater. Not a great plan.
If someone changed the heater, how did they shut the water off to do it?
Sure hope the powers off, if not and there's no water in the tank then plan on buying a new heater the elements have melted by now. Only takes about a min. to melt them.

In order to get good suggestions from us- walk us through the tank installation process.
Where are the valves located the turned off the water supply to the heater?
Have you confirmed that they are open?
Do you have cold water at your faucets?

can't get water to go in hotwater heater

I installed a gas water heater two years ago, working fine. I turned the cold valve off just before heater to work on the Humidifier. Turned the water on and nothing coming out of the hot water faucet in the sink. The gate on the Chinese made valve did not move stayed in the closed position!

Ball valve all the way now
