Cannot unsolder a joint

I need to unsolder a joint but am unable to. It is 1/2 copper going into an inline shutoff valve. I need to replace an outside faucet but cannot unsolder it from the inside valve. I am using a propane torch and I have tried heating it for up to 3 - 4 minutes but it will not budge even with gentle persuading with a vice grip. The pipe is horizontal and since the outside valve is open, I assume empty of water. It is about 20 years old. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds to me like not enough heat or residual water in the line. Buy or borrow a MAPP gas torch, you'll never go back to propane.

Tettor is right with the Mapp gas. It sure beats propane. Be carefull with it though it is easy to over heat joints with it.
Can't you just cut the pipe and fit up new to what you need?

I could just cut it and fit it up. Haven't done a lot of plumbing and I didn't know if this was the "correct" way to do it. Thanks for the replies!
