Can a p-trap be placed quite some distance from a drain?

I'm creating a standing shower upstairs and don't have a lot of room in the joists for a p-trap without creating a soffit in the ceiling below. I was thinking about directing the drain down through the first floor to a p-trap in the basement where room isn't an issue. Is there any reason this wouldn't be advisable?

The trap according to my code, distance between the drain of fixture to the trap, can't be more then 24" So to answer your question, you can't do that.

How do you not have room for a p-trap in the floor joists? Aren't they at least 2x6 ? A p-trap should fit up inside of a 2x6......
