Can lateral relining fix seperation at city main?

A friend has a 5-unit apartment building which has recently required regular hydrojetting to remove roots. A 4" iron sewer pipe exits the building and then, after about 20 feet and a couple bends, transitions to a 6" clay lateral at a point under the driveway. The 6" is then a straight shot to a Y-connection with the city main collection pipe in the middle of the street. Only the 6" clay portion has root invasion. So the idea is to either re-line or replace this section of pipe.

Complicating things is a recent discovery made when a cam was sent in, following the last hydrojet. A separation, allowing roots to enter, has formed right at where the lateral joins with the city main sewer pipe, under the middle of the street.

We are in search of a long-lasting solution, that might avoid the high cost associated with digging a trench in the street. I know that a sewer re-ligning can fix issues with roots penetrating the gaps between sections of clay pipe, but can it fix a separation at the connection between the clay lateral and the main?

Usually the city sewer department takes over responsibility at the street curb.

Unfortunately, in this instance, the property owner is responsible for the entire sewer lateral, up to and including the connection to the city's mainline sewer.

Can lateral relining fix seperation at city main?

In my city the home owner is responsible up to the 45 at the main.
I have been involved with liners that have bridged small separations, but these occurred on the homeowners property.
I have also sleeved 6" clay or concrete pipe with 4" 3034 PVC (solvent weld hubs)
A 4x6 fernco is used to seal the pipes at the end of the 6"
This method only works with a good, straight 6" line as the 4" will bind on the side walls of a crooked pipe and it won't keep roots out for ever.

Even though our homeowners are responsible for the lateral, the city makes the rules on the repair.
It is best to call in some experts who line or do laterals and are bonded with your city.

Sorry to hear that! That can get rather costly if you need to rip open the street.
