Can I go from 6" to 8" deep sink? (picture)

Hi everyone,

I'm embarking on a little project - replacing my kitchen sink. I'm going to post a couple questions to get started, and I plan to come back and post a photo of the completed results.

My sink is currently 6" deep. I want an 8" deep sink. Judging from the picture, do you think this is okay? My main concern is the right basin - I'm worried that if the sink is 2" lower, it may not have enough vertical pipe to travel through before hitting the P trap.

Oh, and that random white tube is the outlet from the dishwasher, but it came off disposal one day and I don't ever use the DW anyway. I left it alone.

Let me know your thoughts about a deeper sink. Thanks!

it can be nut to nut so it looks like you have enough but if not just use left drain for both and cap right

So nut-to-nut is okay? The tailpiece measures 2.5" (sans nut) so I think I'll be reeeeeally close. I'm trying to avoid reconfiguring the set-up to drain all to the left. But you know a lot more about what you're talking about than I do. I'll see what it's like after dry fitting with the new sink in a few days.

I agree. Run both bowls to the drain the disposal goes to now and cap the other off.

Are there any benefits to doing that, other than keeping things clean and simple underneath the cabinet? The only thing I've ever done as far as plumbing goes, was replacing 3 toilets in my house, but that was fairly simple. I'm pretty nervous about messing things up while trying to run both bowls to the same drain.

My wife is extremely iffy about me attempting to try it on my own - she would rather us pay the plumber. Plumber's asking for $510 total, which seemed ridiculous to me.

$240 (labor)
$60 (replace hot/cold shut off valves)
$60 ('extra' work resulting from changing the sink depth to 8")
$65 (install the disposal)
$45 (hauling the old stuff away)
$40 (required fee to drive out to my home)

Dont know about where you live, but around here that is a great price. I wont say how much I charged, but I just did a new kitchen sink install with garbage disposal and new undersink piping. My charge was quite a bit more than the $510 you were quoted.

The benefit is going to be not having to cut into the wall to lower the right hand side drain. In addition, it will clean things up and make life simple. Well beer helps too.

Is the new sink a double or single bowl?

Dish washer drain not allowed to go to the garbage disposer---
P-trap for each sink----

A local plumber should know local code----but if you do this yourself----do your homework before starting===

Double - both bowls will be the same size, just deeper.

Could you clarify what JDCs means? Googled JDC, JDCs, and a number of combinations but it's bringing up nothing. Thanks.

Mike is referring to post #4 where both bowls are tied into one drain.

What oh'mike said is very true. Codes vary and you really need to know what is and isnt allowed according to your code.

Why do codes vary? DO feces act differently in different locales? Or are PI's just full of feces in varying amounts?
