bubbling toilet
 

When I drain my bathtub my toilet bubbles a very discusting septic gas. I thought it was my vent so I went onto the roof and attempted to unblock it with a hose and a 10 ft piece of #4 rebar. No luck. There was no blockage I could tell (I have heard of people in the area having mud dobber wasps block plumbing vents.) Any suggestions?

It sounds like the mainline is blocked up, or starting to get blocked up, clean out the mainline line to fix this problem.

Thanks Ron, By clean out the main line do you mean snake it or is it more involved? Since my first post I have done some more reading and found out it could be a full septic tank. The tank was pumped two or three years ago and new tail lines were installed. I figgure cleaning the main line will be the cheaper thing to rule out first.

Yes snake line to tank, and then if thats not it, then suspect it to be the tank.

It is recommended that septic tanks be pumped out at least every five years. (I have mine pumped out in every year ending in 5 or 0 to keep it idiot proof. lol). If a septic system is getting heavier usage (larger family, etc.) or in very poor soil (such as a clay mix), then it should be pumped more often. Additives are a waste of money. If you have trees or bushes cloe to or over the drainfield, then you can flush a cup or two of copper sulphate blue crystals down about three times a years to help keep roots out. That's really all of the maintenance a spetic system needs, other than keeping the main drain line clear of clogs.
