gently sawzall through the galvanized threads until you hit the female threads. Then chisel out the broken threads. Remove all the remaining gal. drain pipe possible. It's toast.

Mike
Not clear if the broken pipe is acting as a drain or a vent. Vent pipes positioned 6 inches above the flood rim of a fixture are technically a vent and if not wet vented are air vents and only subject to probably rain water Having said that not knowing the why's of it breaking you can cut a small say 2 inch section out of the pipe and repair with a hubless connector or fernco This would be for a straight pipe break not where drainage fitting are located

At some point steel pipes will always leak, close up on the inside or fail in some way.
Might be a good time to bite the bullet and replace it all with PVC.

Was your battery low when you made this inquiry?

How about some pictures? This is almost 2013.
