Breakfast bar

I'm opening up my kitchen by cutting a wall in half and turning it into a breakfast bar. I'm wanting to know do I top the wall off with a 2x4 or a 1x6 before putting my counter top on? Can anyone help me out?

2x4 works for me if itís a 2x4 wall but before you cut anything do you even know if the wall is load bearing or not? You canít just go cutting walls in half just because there in your way.

Ok thanks! Yes it's a load bearing wall. My support wall is already built as well as my header...

I agree 2x4 is the better choice. Good luck
