Bread....Worlds Greatest Invention

Bread has got to be one of the best inventions ever....

Us guys can eat anything if you slap it between two slices...

What better way to enjoy a bowl of soup.

It's great fun for the kids to take a few slices and feed the birds.

But.....the best thing about it? You wad up a slice nice and tight...shove it up inside a copper pipe that will not stop leaking and you can now sweat that pipe without using half a bottle of MAP gas....

I've never tried this. My boss doesn't approve of it. I don't know why or care. He says don't do it so I don't.

What I have heard is that white bread works the best.

Saved me when I needed to cap a 3/4" line some time ago. Damn thing just would not get up to temp. Bit 'o bread stuffed up the line dealt with the problem right away. Paid a pro to do the rest of the work after that. Eventually the main 1" shut off was replaced, but it wasn't clear at the time that was the problem.

I assume you've got to blow the bread out of there at some point, so best to do it before you install that toilet or faucet right? Can't imagine a wad of wet bread doing well in the aerator of a kitchen faucet.

Sure, just open a tap downstream from it, one without a screen or something to get clogged. But even if you didn't bread won't clog much, at least not plain old white bread. 7 grain earthy crunchy stuff covered with sunflowers, no that wouldn't be the right kind to use...

After a bit of that there's only one kind of leak I care about... the rest can go to

Works great for me, white bread works better than wheat bread.

For me, I have the best success with fresh white bread. I peel off the crust and wad up the white part.

When I'm done, I use the largest and closest tap downstream...typically the bathtub.

Bread....Worlds Greatest Invention

Such an old "plumbers trick"....

Just used it yesterday. Works with rye bread too....

And FWIW, even if there's a screen on the faucet the bread will break down soon enough. It just looks strange to some people (my wife for instance)...

"Honey, have you been putting bread in the pipes again?"
