Brass shut off valve

My dad has a brass shut off valve. He bought a plastic concection that screwed into the brass and the copper tube went into the other end. I turned the water and the copper tube sprayed all over. Can I put something on the copper or do I need try something else?

Not sure why the connection was plastic. You need to switch that out and install a copper or brass fitting with a compression fitting or solder it.
