Brass Plated Fixtures

Hello,
Some of my bathroom fixtures such as soap dish and cup & toothbrush holders are brass plated and I noticed that they corrode after a few years and that I believe that they are foreign made. I also have a solid brass showerhead by Delta that is 15 years old and shows no signs of corrosion. It appears that brass plated fixtures do not hold up well vs solid brass fixtures. Are plumbers of the same opinion?
I just replaced the faucets in my two bathrooms with solid brass polished ones and I like to know if its safe to apply butchers wax for added protection. The manufacturer's only recommend cleaning with a damp cloth, but over time, the protective finish will probally break down and is not noticeable until the brass starts to show surface marks. What products will give me good protection that will not affect the protective coating?

Do as the manufacture says to do, or you could void any warranty.

I forgot about possible voiding of warranty. Will do as you advise. But will continue to upgrade my fixtures with solid polish brass as I had it with the plated ones. More expensive up front but cheaper in the long run. I tracked down the manufacturer of the plated soap and toothbrush holder and found that they are zinc alloy underneath the brass finish. These plated products do not hold up.

Perhaps there is a clear laquer applied over the finish of the fixtures that have held up?

Think about it, does your showerhead get the same amount of cleaning as the rest of the fixtures? Even though solid brass is better, I doubt you used the same cleaning compounds on the showerhead, or as often, as you did the other parts.

Yes, once the laquer coat gets scratched, then discoloration begins.
I have used Lysol Bathroom cleaner a few times on the plated brass. I don't remember if I ever cleaned the solid brass showerhead or the plated robe hanger and the robe hanger has some discoloration. That and the soap dish and toothbrush holder will be replaced soon and in the future, I will keep all my brass wiped down with a damp cloth.
