Boost Pump for Improved Water Pressure
I have lived in my 36 year old MN home for 32 years and am considering adding a pressure boost pump for our well water system. The house is plumbed with 1", 3/4" and 1/2" copper and the pump/pressurized tank has a 30/50 switch. I routinely drain and re-charge the tank to avoid a water logged tank. I don't have a water softener and do have some mineral buildup in sinks but have never found any evidence of mineral deposits clogging copper pipes that I have repaired.
We have lived with low pressure in our second floor showers for years but I'd like to improve the pressure and am considering two steps. First, I plan to replace all 1/2" bathroom pipes with 3/4". I estimate both the hot and cold lines have 10 feet of 1/2" pipe after the 3/4" supply, as well as several 90 degree joints, a couple of which can be eliminated.
Second I have considered a pressure boost pump. From the way my home is plumbed, the pump needs to boost pressure to the whole house. There is plenty of water supply from the well. Here are my questions:
1. Does it sound reasonable to change the 1/2" copper to 3/4" in the bathroom supply?
2. Does boosting the pressure to something like 50/70 or 60/80 present a risk of bursting 36 year-old copper joints?
3. Does anyone have experience with how noisy a booster pump is or how to minimize noise? Good brand name?

You can probably adjust the cut in/cut off switch to 40/60 without replacing the well pump. I have a well and a similar situation, I run at 40/60. I don't know that I would want to run much higher than that, fixtures could leak, and it certainly stresses pipe joints. As to replacing 1/2 inch with 3/4 inch, you are going to get a small increase in pressure at the bathroom due to reduced friction loss, but not necessarily a whole lot, I would at least look into adjusting the well control switch first.
