Big Blue Filter: Before or After Softener?

for a house with visibly dirty well water, meaning there's black particles in the water (maybe iron?), should the big blue filter be installed before or after the culligan softener?

2nd question: will the culligan softener (installed in 2012) flush out well water particles during regeneration, or do the particles stay in the resin bed?

Put the filter before with a ball valve on each side to make it easier to service.
As far as water softeners go I dont like them and have never gone out of my way to work on them.
