Bathtub Surround Ledge material

Hello, I am trying to decide on what material to use for the tub surround ledge. Installing a 6ft rectangle airjet tub. I am using paneling for the skirt and will have the frame built out of wood. I Do not want to tile (Want a smooth finish) and don't want to spend the big $$$ on a big piece of stone. If wood is sealed correctly will it be good enough to with stand water? (ie pealing and caulking issues).

Is there anything else I can do? If it comes down to wood what size and type would be the best?

Thanks.

Considered Formica??? It is not easy to seal wood for such a wet area. Wood expands/contracts with moisture changes considerably more than other surfacing materials. Man made quartz or solid surface are better than natural stone, IMHO.
