Bathtub Replacement

We are removing our old steel tub and replacing with an acrylic or fiberglass tub.

Does it depend on the manufacturing on whether you add a mortar base before setting tub or is this standard practice?

I think they all recommend mortar. You can crack and/or flex if not.
