when running just the bathtub everything works perfectly. but when the shower is activated there is quite a lot of water squirting from the back of the bathtub faucet, despite the shower seemingly working fine. i removed the spout for the bathtub and didnt notice any cracks or defaults, there were two plastic pieces fitted over the copper pipe, an o-ring (that looked okay) and a copper ring with a screw that tightens it all up. i tried just tightening the srcrew which didnt work. then, with the spout removed i placed my thumb over the spout to activate the shower and it worked perfectly...no leak...what could be wrong and how do i fix it
Caulk around all your trim plates and tub spout. Upper and sides only leave bottom open. Also if your using shower curtains is there water outside the tub on the floor after a shower?
If the seal in the spout is leaking inside the spout all that sealing everyone's suggesting will do nothing but cause the water to run down inside the wall.
When you loosen that screw does the spout unscrew, or just slip on?
If it unscrews then it may be someone made the pipe to short and the adaptors not fully screwing on.
A picture is always nice.
Sounds like a Moen product or a knock off and the diverter is bad in the end of the spout.
All the screw does is hold the spout on the pipe- doesn't help seal
I believe Pasco makes a replacement spout. There are probably other brands too
You'll pay more for the Moen name if you choose their spout which you might have to if it's a fancy model.
A call to Moen might get you a free spout--they are generous with replacement parts,
If you need to buy a new spout--I suggest you go to the plumbing supply house --I usually buy Moen--the ones I've used from the big stores were all junk---
