Bathroom sink drain smells like eggs

My bathroom sink only (5 other sinks in house with no issues) has a mild egg-like smell coming from the drain. You really only notice it when you are leaning over the sink when brushing your teeth. 2 weeks ago I took apart the drain/trap and cleaned it all out with bleach water and the smell disappeared. Now it's back. Again, it's only this drain.

I looked this up online and reasons are listed as either presence of sulfur in the water or sewer gases coming up. The water itself has no smell to it though, and when I cleaned the drain before there seemed to be plenty of water in the P trap.

So what could be causing this? Any ideas?

Over flow is nasty. Look at the back of the bowl to see if there's a hole for the over flow.
Some bleach shot in with a turkey baster may clean it out.

No hole in back of the bowl for the overflow, just the ones at the front that go right to the drain, but I can try shooting some bleach down there.

Thanks

Are you positive the trap is full of water when you get the smell? A pic of your trap & under sink piping wouldn't hurt.

Have you already removed the stopper and cleaned up all the gunked up hair in there?

Pour hydrogen peroxide down the drain and the overflow.

Yes, I completely cleaned it out 2 weeks ago and the smell disappeared only temporarily.

I did flush some bleach solution through the overflow so I will have to wait and see if that does the trick.

That form of bacteria is resistant to bleach use hydrogen peroxide... The stuff your mom put on your cuts that bubbles...

does the sink have an overflow? If it does make sure you block the sink and fill it up with one bottle of the stuff and let it go down the overflow.

Block the sink as in the stopper?

I can use a baster with hydrogen peroxide and squirt it down the overflow hole if that will work.

Thanks for all the advice.

Friends of ours get this out of one of their bath sinks. It is something with their well water, that is reacting with the hand soap that is used at that sink, is what they believed it to be. Have not heard anything more about it, so I am guessing that they figured it out. Your's though appears due to the trap is not long enough to hold enough water, which may have also been the problem with the friends of ours, but never checked back to see if that was the case.

Go get a better trap, than that "street" trap that you are using, and see if that first fixes the issue. If not, then take the next steps in the links below.

This explains a little more why you are getting the Sulfar smell http://en.allexperts.com/q/Plumbing-...ell-faucet.htm Resource http://www.water-research.net/sulfate.htm#sources

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?
