Basement Bathroom Smells

My Basement bathroom shower drain smells. But when I flush the toilet the smell comes out of the sink as well and it smells even worse. The upstairs bathroom is fine. Any Ideas?? Thanks

The system is not vented correctly----Air must enter the piping in order for the water to go down the drain.

Ever turn a pop bottle upside down? It won't empty very fast--but poke a hole in the jug and it will empty right away---

You are not getting air into the system as you should so the P-traps are getting sucked dry when you flush the toilet.--the system needs air--Mike---

3 choices.......

Install proper venting or air admittance valve (search the forum there are many posts on this subject).......

Call a plumber......

Use the upstairs bathroom....

Jack has it right---How finished is the basement? any way to see the piping and tell if there is a vent pipe near the toilet? It's possible the vent pipe is simply installed wrong or never hooked up at all.
