Barbed fittings into 1-1/2 inch Black Poly

I need to re-do two connections on my swimming pool plumbing. This will require removing two barbed fittings from 1-1/2 inch black poly tubing, shortening the tubing slightly, then inserting one new fitting and re-inserting one of the old fittings.

What is the best way to insert barbed fittings into this stiff tubing? Dish soap? Wooden block with hammer? Heat gun? All three?

Thanks,

BTW - This tubing was originally installed in 1987, making it 23 years old. Just to add another challenge.

Using the heat gun just enough to warm and soften the poly you should be able to have no need for any thing else, but a rubber mallet might be nice to have on the side..
I have done the heat with a propane touch before when having to do what you are doing.
Very Very Light with the heat...!!!

heat gun is the best approach

When I installed my parents' sprinkler system (1" Poly) I just used a hairdryer to heat up the end of the tubing, then pushed the fittings in quickly.
