Balancing rads
I am unsure if your goal of balancing the whole system would even be desired? Various rooms and areas of a home or flat have different demands for heat. I would think this would be a more important issue to make the "home comfortable" not the "system balance". My be I am not understanding your goal or question.

Balancing rads
Nice link. I see setting them up apears to be similar to setting up superheat on a A/C cooling evaporator with a ajustable TXV.

Balancing rads
Its a simple process:
Each radiator has at least one valve (ideally 2 & one of which is a thermostat) Close the valves on the radiators "upstairs" completely. Make sure the downstairs raditor valves are full open. Why?? Because hot water is lighter than cold water & will prefer to flow through the upstairs radiators. Turn on your heating system, wait until the radiators are hot downsstairs. Measure temperature on each radiator, note the value Eg Kitchen 36, Living room 40, hall 45. In this example you have a higher flow rate through the hall radiator so close the valve on this radiator a little. This restricts flow through this radiator & forces the excess through the other 2. Continue adjusting until they are all equal (+ or - 2 degrees) Then open the valves on the upstairs radiator to 50%, wait 20 minutes then measure temperature on each upstairs rad. Use the same method as above to balance them out. |
