backup sump pump does not clear the pit when triggered, normal?

My backup sump pump does not clear the pit when triggered, normal?

I have the sensor about 8" from the top, and when I unplug the sumppump and let it fill, they backup will trigger when the sensor is hit, but will only discharge about 10" of water, and then stop.

Is that normal, or is it suppose to run enough to clear the whole pit?

Generally speaking,...
The sump pump is supposed to keep the sump low enough to continue collecting water,...
Not necessarily drain the sump Completely dry....

Most sump pumps have a high and low sensor. They do not normally "clear" the sump of water. Since the inlet is usually on the bottom of the pump, there is a chance that it would run dry and overheat the motor.

Most battery powered backup sump pumps run on timers. After initiation, it may go for 20 seconds only, unless the float is still activated.
