Attach toilet flange to plywood subfloor, or on top of tile?

I'm in the middle of a bathroom model. We tore out the old tile, sink, toilet, etc. We will eventually put down cement backerboard over the plywood subfloor, then new tile over that.

The old toilet flange was resting on top of the old tile, screws through the tile and backerboard ... was that right? We recently bought the house and there's been shoddy workmanship throughout the house. Should I repeat that or should I screw it directly to the plywood subfloor, maybe trying to get the top of it to sit flush with the tile?

Toilet flange goes on top of the finished floor. Ideally, at least.

So yeah, you were good before, just rinse and repeat.

I prefer the flange attached to the backer board then tile around the flange---

-on top of the tile is okay as long as you don't use a 3" inside mount flange--or use a thick pvc flange or have an imported toilet--

I have had to reset the flange below the finished floor many times over the years---
