Ao smith build date

AO Smith has a confusing collection of numbering methods:

If two letters first, next two numbers are year.
If one letter first, followed by two numbers and another letter, next two numbers are year.
If one letter first, next two numbers are year, providing no letter follows.
If two numbers first, this is year

So for yours:

mk99-0058325-246 = 1999

Ao smith build date

But how do you determine the month and day?
When searching for a part it requires a build date mm/dd/yyyy

Ao smith build date

I've never seen a capacity plate which listed the day of manufacture, often they do not even list the month.

Ao smith build date

Hi Thanks again but I've looked at a few ao smith water heaters at friends and they all have a serial number and a build date, mm,dd,yyyy on the sticker. However mine is a bit older and don't have the build date listed as such but seem to think it's in the coding of the serial number. Read somewhere they use letters to denote the month A-M excluding I so an A would mean January but can't seem to figure the date out.
Weh I try to locate a part as waterheaterparts.com they insist on having a build date along with the model number to locate parts for the unit.
Thanks again

Ao smith build date

The build date does really not mean that much.

After it is built, it goes to a distributor's warehouse than to a dealers warehouse.

The installation date in really the critical date, because 4 year old heater stored in a warehouse is just as good as a one day old heater IF it is the same model. - I have seen 3 year old heaters installed in new homes that were never used.

Ao smith build date

Just checked, AO Smith is indeed now putting a full built date on the plate (I believed you, I was just trying to determine when they started). That's pretty unusual, Rheem for example uses mm/yy, and may others encode it in the SN and don't list the date information in a conventional date format.

Regarding the month and day, if all else fails, "maybe" the ending 246 is the julian date. If it is, then 246 = September 3rd.
