Yup box with a red x. If you want to post a picture you need to post it at a site that allow direct linking not one that requires you to log in.

My guess would be a automatic shutoff in the event of an open line???? The long gadget below is a pressure or flow monitor, not sure about the thing with all the wires, an shutoff valve??

I agree with Bill, looks to be a shut off of some kind to me, need some more pics of the sides and back maybe.
Was just giving ya a hard time about the X in box thing, posting pics can be a real pain sometimes.

Is this on the water supply to the house? It looks like it might be part of a hydronic heating system. It could be a zone valve to shut off that zone. It could be a whole house shutoff in case of a leak.

The thing is on the incoming supply line - so you see it right after the pressure regulator. The wires are unhooked and just left in place on the stud - where they went would have helped I know.

Stumped me.... I suppose it may end up being one of those mysteries but it sure had me curious...

I will guess.

The round thing looks like a solonoid valve. Does the black thing have two wires coming out of it?

The box installed on the skinny pipes is probably a pressure gauge.

I am thinking that, when wired up and turned on, the pressure gauge would sense a drop in pressure and activate the solonoid valve to shut off the water.

Three wire out of the box which has air tubes on it also. The grey wire is just hanging down - looks like it hooked in where you see the wire nuts.

I'm thinking the guess about some auto shut off is right....

Since you're asking I'm guessing you didn't install it so this won't hurt your feelings, but it looks like a rats nest of wiring with a stem that could snap off too easily so protect it but leave it accessable.
I would tidy up and twist that wiring where the blue connectors are and pull that wire at least 6" back above if possible from any pipe connections then clamp with a nylon cable tie, not tape. Wires look like low v signal wiring perhaps to an external sensor?????
