Any downsides to 6in sewer lateral?

I'm researching and spec'ing out the house I hope to build in a few years.

Now, I haven't checked with the city or even a plumber yet - I just wanted to float this idea by some experienced amateurs and possibly professionals on the forum here before investigating further.

Any thoughts on going with a 6in sewer lateral over 4in? That 6in diameter will probably extend a few feet above the basement floor on at least one drain stack. I know parts will be more expensive, and a backflow preventer has been harder to find, etc.

My primary reason for considering 6in is nothing more than "if 4in is good, 6in must be better!"

Thanks in advance!

You go too big and run the risk of not getting a proper scouring of the lateral drain when running water et al to the sewer. Sizing charts are there for a reason and based on decades of experience.

Agreed. 4" will handle more fixtures then you could ever put in your house. For example, a 3" horizontal line will take up to 3 toilets per UPC...
