amtrol pressure tank pump is shutting on and off

I have a RP-10hp press tank that has been running fine. I noticed recently that the pump was running for about 3 seconds and then shutting off for abut 10 seconds. I know this can't be right, since the pump normally runs for an extended period of time when there is steady and continuous water demand. Is my pump going? Is there a fix?

Could be the tank.

Call a local driller and buy one from them. The tanks sold at big box stores and hardware store are not as good.

It also could be a leak in the well.

Tell us more about the well.

Is the tank saturated (has too much water in it)?

A quick calibration of the tank can be done by turning off the pump, emptying the tank, closing the tank air valve again, and turning the pump back on.

More precise calibration is done using air gauges, external hand pumps, etc. but Inwon't go into the details now.

Should the tank become saturated again very quickly, you should replace it.

1 - blown tank diaghpragm, replace tank
2 - wrong pressure in tank - adjust to 2lbs below cut in pressure
3 - bad pressure switch - replace
4 - line or nipple to pressure switch plugged up - clean it out
5 - pump going off on overload - replace pump
