Advice on ABS fittings
Hi fellas.
I will start off with a simple question and see were I get from there.
Do they make ABS fittings that will go over 4 inch O.D. ABS pipe?
Thanks

Like couplings, tees, elbows, toilet flanges, etc ?
Yes... they make them.
As to "O.D." reference I'll assume you made a typo.
Pipe is measured on the INSIDE.

I just knew I was not going to get through this one easily, well maybe easily for you guys is what I really mean. The toilet that was installed in our ensuite some 25 years ago was put in with a few errors this was long before we bought it.Now I'm doing a reno and you always find things once a floor is lifted up or a wall demolished.I need to replace the toilet flange and 90 degree elbow under it. So to do this I have to go back to where there's a straight piece of 4 inch O.D. pipe. The reason I'm giving this measurement is there may be a smaller diameter pipe inside it.I have only a small amount of pipe to work with and a small amount of room as I do not want to open the the downstairs ceiling up to get at the plumbing. Now I bet I have really opened a can of worms
Thanks Heeps

Are you saying the pipe inside has a 4" OD? Is it plastic too?

Joe,I realize ABS is ABS. One point I'm trying to make and make it without getting you guy's all tied up in knots is I do not know the I.D. (inside diameter) of the pipe as I have not cut it and I do not have a lot of space nor pipe to play with to make mistakes.
Thanks

I'm trying to say that where there is a section of straight ABS pipe that I may be able to cut off and add to, has a 4inch O.D. So is there an ABS fitting that will go over a 4inch outside diameter with a tight fit and I would be able to glue it with ABS glue.I'm I making myself understood or is it clear as mud? I would take a picture but it would not show much, maybe a diagram would work.

I have never seen any ABS pipe with a OD of 4". 4" is roughly 4.5" OD
3" pipe is 3.5" OD.
Now, don't take offense but I suggest you double check your measurement. I believe you haven't cut the pipe so how did you determine 4" od without measuring across the cut piece?

A 3" coupling may have an approximate OD of 4" - never really measured one.

^^ This.
Also, go to the home center to measure some pipe and fittings there.
Maybe even buy a few to take home with you.

If it's 4" O.D. and looks kinda like ABS, it may be orangeburg.
I've never seen 3" orangeburg around here so I don't even know if it really exists, but I know the 4" Orangeburg is a lot closer to 5" O.D. than it is to 4.5" O.D.
also ESPECIALLY if it's failing, it's going to be wider due to vertical compression.

Are those scarry faces a way of saying your not quite happy with my posts? If so you have to remember the old line "if you don't ask you won't know". At 56 years I find that I am learning everyday.I know it must be frustrating when a homeowner posts a question that seems so obvious to a journeyman in any trade.
Thanks scarrylarry

No offense taken E plumber ! Your right, I have not yet cut the pipe.I'm going to double check the O.D. of the pipe,I'll use calipers.
Thanks

Advice on ABS fittings
Thanks for all the help with the ABS toilet plumbing fellas it's finished, sort of !. I had to rip up more of the subfloor to see exactly what I had to work with and them it was just a matter of getting the parts and cut some pipe to length.
There is one more slight problem I will have once I lay the vinyl flooring down. The closet (toilet) flange is going to need a longer barrell on it because I think it needs to sit into the elbow beneath it a little further than it will.I read somewhere that it needs to be inserted at least a third of the way into the fitting.
Thanks
