ABS vs PVC

I'm moving some pipes in a remodeling project. All the of the pipes are ABS. I need a fitting that I can't find from Lowes/Home Depot in ABS so I have to use PVC. Is that ok? The dry fit isn't nearly as tight at the ABS/PVC connection. Should I use all purpose cement at the connection or something else?

Most cements are not listed for PVC to ABS connections and as a rule you should never do it. I know of one cement that is listed for it, but last time I check connecting the two materials together is against code. You might consider either a threaded connection or a Fernco connector.

A fernco is the way to go. BUT.. yes you can buy ABS to PVC glue. not all purpose glue.

I found a transition glue ABS to PVC for non-pressure joints. I need it in 2 places. Where the drain & overflow meet the p-trap and at a 90 fitting from the T to sewer. Both joints are tub/shower drains.

Should the joint hold up?

It is one of those things that they advise against but if you use the right glue and cleaner you shouldn't have any problems with it. I had no choice but to do it on one connection in my basement and it has held up fine. The glue I used is a light greenish blueish color and was specifically for ABS to PVC connections.
