Something burrowing under garage

Hi everyone, this is my very first time posting here. We are new homeowners and need some help, preferably without having to spend money on professionals. We've been here a few months and in that time I've got 2 mice, last week my husband saw what he said looked like a rat. This last weekend we completely cleaned out the garage of trash, etc. We found a hole thaat leads into the walls of the garage that we believe is where they are coming in and out.Today we discovered a pile of dirt, pieces of cement/rock in the garage that wasn't there last night, it's inbetween the garage floor and garage wall. Is this something a rat/mouse would do? Any ideas on how to get rid of them, my kids go in and out of the garage when they play and I don't want them getting sick, etc.

I tried attatching a picture, hopefully it works.

I cannot exactly figure out the pic but all that loose stone etc I cannot believe was done by any mouse or rat. Groundhog maybe.

right- tough angle/perspective with that picture. Looks bigger than mickey mouse. I would dump a 1/2 gallon of Ace hardware ammonia 10% industrial grade down there- thatl smoke them out. Hold your nose!!! Oh, it shouldnt kill them- just annoy the smitherines out of them, and keep them from coming back.
