How soon after treatment do roaches die ?

We have also had this done and in the past the technician gave us an invoice of what chemicals he used during the spray (diluted in water). Are commercial pest chemicals available to the public? The Spray cans themselves can be bought at places like HD/Lowes/Menards etc...
