temper glass for fireplace mantel shelf

The fireplace shop said I need a fireplace mantel shelf to deflect the heat from the gas log fireplace. I have a 50 inch plasma above my fireplace. However, from the top of my marble tile to the bottom of my plasma is only 2 inches. Would I be able to use temper glass which would be 60inches (width of my fireplace) by 8 inch and 1/4 inch thick (is this good?)as a fireplace mantel shelf? Would 2 inches of drywall with studs be enough space for the wall bracket to attach the glass piece?

What other alternative would there be for a mantel shelf?

You know what sil, I would contact the local Fire Department Fire Marshall/Inspector AND the local Building Inspection Department for those answers.
Then you won't create any problems accidentally, and your family will be safe.
