Painting over an oak fireplace mantle

We have recently decided to paint the walls in our living room chocolate brown with a white ceiling. The room has high ceilings, skylights and received a lot of natural light. The original trim was birch stained to match the oak fireplace. We will be putting in new baseboards and painting them white, our windows are have wood casements that are stained. We are putting in a bamboo floor that is very light in color. My problem is the fireplace I don't want to paint the oak but lighten it up any suggestions. I am attaching photos.
