Hi everyone. Below is a photo of our living room wall. It is entirely brick with a wood fireplace insert. It has a ledge along the bottom which is approximately 14" deep.
We want to build a mantle to surround the fireplace and mount our tv over top. We aren't sure how to build the mantle underneath the ledge. Should it extend below? Should it only extend to the ledge and leave the brick underneath the ledge as is?
If it matters we will be painting the brick (not sure on color/style yet).
Having legs on the mantel is your preference. You can attach 2X4s to the brick and install the mantel over the 2Xs. Code in this area is, no wood shall be closer than 12 inches above fire box and 8 inches on each side of fire box, per inch of protrusion. This is code on a real fire place.
