fireplace mantle and trim board

We have been in our new home for about a yr now and are getting ready to build a mantle for our fireplace. Our woodwork trim is white and our kitchen cupboards are a light cherry brown. I want to stain the mantle the same color as the kitchen cupboards but my husband thinks it should be white like the trim. It's a ranch home and the kitchen/dining area and living room flow together. Any suggestions?

I'd go with something totally different. After all, the mantle is like a seperate piece of furniture and a focal point of that room.

I like the idea of stained cherry to match your kitchen. I wouldn't do something completely different as Chrisn suggested, too many different finishes and the rooms don't flow. It doesn't have to match your trim, but it does need to match other permanent fixtures.
